The Mughal prince Dara Shikoh is known to have personally translated a large number of Hindu texts, such as the Upanishads, into a compilation known as the Sirr-e-Akbar, as well as a treatise on Hindu-Muslim syncretism, namely the Majma-ul-Bahrain. Dara Shukoh subsequently developed a friendship with the seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai. He devoted much effort towards finding a common mystical language between Islam and Hinduism. Towards this goal he completed the translation of fifty Upanishads from their original Sanskrit into Persian in 1657 so that they could be studied by Muslim scholars. His translation is often called Sirr-e-Akbar.

He was a patron of fine arts, music and dancing. But, his brother Aurangazeb had vandalised and destroyed most of the art works of Dara Shikoh. Tomb of his wife Nadira Begum and the Shrine of Mian Mir in Lahore are finest examples to the marvel of Dara Shikoh.
