The main objective of jal jeevan mission is to
ensure piped water supply to all rural households by 2024. This is achieved
through following measures as part of har ghar nal se jal scheme.
1) focus on integrated demand and supply
side management of water at the local level, including creation of local
infrastructure for source sustainability like rainwater harvesting, groundwater
recharge and management of household wastewater for reuse in agriculture
2) converge with other Central and State
Government Schemes to achieve its objectives of sustainable water supply
management across the country.
The Jal Jeevan Mission will be based
on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information,
Education and communication as a key component of the mission. JJM looks like
jan andolan and govt took it on top priority.
Government has identified 1592 Blocks
which are critical and over exploited, spread across 256 Districts for the Jal
Shakti Abhiyan for rainwater harvesting and water conservation in the first
phase and carry out other initiatives including renovation of traditional water
bodies and tanks, reuse of water recharge structures, watershed development and
intensive afforestation.
Around 3.5
trillion will be spent under the ambitious Jal Jeevan Mission aimed at
providing piped water to all rural households by 2024.
Policy
think-tank Niti Aayog said in a report that nearly 600 million Indians already
face “high to extreme water stress." It said 21 cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru,
Chennai and Hyderabad, will run out of groundwater by 2020, affecting 100
million people. Matters are only likely to worsen with the country’s water
demand likely to double by 2030, indicating there will be a 6% loss in gross
domestic product by 2050. Saint Thiruvalluvar saying about disappearance of
water and destruction of nature processes is a true warning sign of future.
