Q. During independence day speech PM Modi said: "Small family is a patriotic duty". In view of this statement examine the need for population control and the measures taken by the government to control population explosion.

PM Modi said On 15 Aug 2019 that Population explosion of India can create new problems, especially for the future generations. He raised the issue of uncontrolled population growth and its consequences for the country. Further, As per United Nations report, India is expected to add 273 million people by the year 2050.

But, the Economic Survey 2018-19 observed that the population growth in India has been slowing for last few decades from an annual growth rate of 2.5 per cent during 1971-81 to an estimated 1.3 per cent as of 2011-16.

However, there is need for population control  because –

To tackle unemployment, reduce pressure on infrastructure etc.,

To provide Quality of Life as resources are limited.

To mimimise the burden of older people in the economy.

It is very expensive for the poor and even the middle class to have more than one child or two children.
