Amir Khusrau was a noted poet, sufi, courtier and musician. He rendered service in almost ten rulers /kings of his time. Some of them were Kaikobad, Ala-ud-din Khilji, Mohmad Tughlaq, Gheyasudin Tughlaq etc. Although he held high positions at different reign, he never forget his spiritual guru Nizamudin Auliya.

Khusrau is a widely respected poet of Hindavi, Rekhta and Perisan. His dictionary Khaliq - e- bari in persian and Hindi words regarded as the oldest one. He was the author of Nuh Siphir (Nine skies) related to the rule of Mubarak Shah. He also written Tughlaq Nama, Wast -ul- Hayat, Ashiqa, Khamsa, Baqia - Naqia etc.

In his poem named Hasth Bihisht , preached religious toleration between Hindu and Muslim. He composed songs and riddles in more common language called Dehlavi Hindi. His contribution to Hindi language and poetry is even talked by critics of today. The language he used later developed as Hindustani.

Many of his poems are even today used by Ghazal singers as bandishes and as ghazals in Hindustani classics. Although his primary language to write poems was Persian, he composed almost half a million verses in Persian, Turkish, Arabic, Braj Bhasha, Hindavi etc. He was the originator of Kayal and Tarana. Kayal now become part of Hindustani classical Music.

Khusrau is father of Qawwali - a form of sufi music originated in Indian Sub continent. He was associated with number of rulers and traveled with them often hinterland. It helped him to include various issues in his poems, verses, songs etc.

Although Amir Khusrau was written on various rulers, his inclination was more towards songs, music, literature etc. Hence, Khusrau was better known as poet rather a historian.
