Ala-ud-din Khilji was not only a military general, warrior but an administrator par excellence. He crushed many nobles and rebels to firm his seat. Further, his reign faced invasions of Mongols from North West India hence to check them he had to bring various reforms.

Some of his important reforms in administration were A. By confiscating all religious endownments and free lands, the nobles and powerful officials became normal citizens. Through this measure, he became successful to check conspiracies and ill intention against the king within the administration. B. With the maintenance of spy system, he came to know all matters from various strata of the people C. Enforcement of ban on alcohol. For sometime, he strictly banned manufacture and consumption of alcohol. When the people resorted to smugling alcohol, he relaxed the ban but restricted sale and allowed for only manufacture and consumption D. He ordered nobles not to have social gatherings.

He brought economic reforms partly to maintain strong Army. So he kept under control necessaries from inflation. He fixed prices of clothes, food grains, vegetables, fruits etc. He stopped purchasing of grains from farmers directly. He gave wealth to merchants and placed goods in abundance before them. They were asked to sale them at fixed prices. Thereby he was successful in containing speculation and black marketing.

With the reforms , he maintained a strong central administration. In his reign certain officials were prominent viz 1. Wazir - most powerful minister and next to the Sultan. 2. Diwan - i - Ariz - responsible for Army and War. 3. Qazi - ul - Quzat - Incharge of judiciary and administered according to Islamic law. 4. Diwan - i - Ashraf - maintain accounts. By implementing reforms strictly , Ala - ud -din Khilji became a prominent ruler in khilji besides having a vast area under their control.

I think we could also add.. 1.He secularised the entire adminstrative system.Rejected the Shariati 2. Abolished iqta system and ziziya tax He was the king with good religious tolerance.
